At One Cosmetic, we offer eyelid surgery in Double Bay to rejuvenate tired or sagging eyes. Also known as blepharoplasty, this procedure targets the upper and/or lower eyelids to remove excess skin, fat, or muscle. Types of blepharoplasty surgery

Upper eyelid blepharoplasty:  Focuses on the upper eyelid. It often involves the removal of excess skin that can cause the eyelid to droop or sag, leading to a “hooded” appearance. This can also improve peripheral vision when drooping skin obstructs sight.

   

Lower eyelid blepharoplasty:  Focuses on the lower eyelid and is primarily performed to reduce puffiness, “bags” under the eyes, or wrinkles. This can involve the removal or repositioning of fat to smooth the area under the eyes.

Why It’s Done

Blepharoplasty can be performed for cosmetic or functional reasons:

  1. Cosmetic reasons: To reduce the appearance of sagging or puffy eyelids, giving the eyes a different appearance. 
  2. Functional reasons: To remove excess skin that impairs vision, especially the upper peripheral vision, or causes discomfort or strain.
Am I a candidate for surgery?

Before deciding whether to pursue surgery, you may be a good candidate for surgery if:

  • You are at a stable weight
  • You are well-supported and have realistic expectations of the surgery
  • You’re able to take sufficient recovery time off of work
  • You are a non–smoker or are willing to abstain from smoking at least 8 weeks before surgery and 8 weeks post-surgery
  • You are 18 years or older
  • You understand there are risks involved and we cannot guarantee outcomes.
The Surgery Process

The decision to undertake any type of elective surgery should be a well thought and long process. We do not recommend rushing into any procedures. Below is a guide on the surgery process and the risks involved. 

The first step in finding out more about surgery is to schedule a private consultation. In this consultation, you will meet directly with your specialist plastic surgeon. This gives you an opportunity to discuss your concerns and get all of your questions answered.

To book a surgery date you can contact our team after a face to face consultation has been completed. You must wait 7 days from the consultation to book a procedure.  

During the consultation, your surgeon will delve into your medical background, inquiring about your medical history and any history of substance abuse, tobacco, or alcohol use. It’s essential to bring along a comprehensive list of all medications and supplements you are currently taking. The consultation includes a thorough examination of your complete and accurate medical history, where you’ll disclose any past surgeries, procedures, or complications you’ve encountered.

This detailed information equips your surgeon to make an informed decision about your general health and assess whether you are an ideal candidate for the procedure—fortunately, the majority of individuals meet the criteria for the intended procedure.

 
As abdominoplasty surgery is lengthy, your surgeon may need you to have pre surgery blood tests or iron infusions.
 

At the end of your consultation, your surgeon will make recommendations about the best course of action to take for your surgery to achieve the result you are after. Every patient is different, and results always vary. While we can look at your inspiration images, we cannot ever guarantee your post surgery results. You must take this into consideration before proceeding with surgery.

Once you’ve booked your surgery date, a pre surgery appointment will be scheduled 4 weeks prior to your date. This is your chance to meet with your surgeon again, ask any further questions, go over the surgery plan and take some images. This appointment ensures you’re well prepared for the upcoming surgery date.

– During the surgery, the surgeon makes incisions along the natural folds of the eyelids to minimise visible scarring.

– Excess skin, muscle, and fat are trimmed away, and the remaining tissue is repositioned and sutured.

– Depending on the case, the procedure can be performed under local anaesthesia with sedation or general anaesthesia.

Once discharged from hospital, into the care of a friend or family member, you’ll be able to recover at home. You will be given a post surgery recovery bra to wear for 6-12 weeks while healing.

Postoperative prescriptions, including antibiotics to prevent infection and painkillers, are often provided, with many cosmetic surgeons prescribing these medications well in advance. Adherence to the post surgery instructions is crucial to ensure optimal healing.

 
 

Specific risks and complications associated with eyelid reduction surgery include:

  • Bruising and swelling
  • Pain and discomfort
  • Removal of too much skin, possibly exposing the cornea to injury
  • Asymmetry of the eyelids
  • Noticeable scarring of the incisions
  • Itchiness, watering or dryness of the eyes
  • Drooping of the lower eyelid which will usually recover but occasionally requires further surgery
  • Temporary changes in vision. In rare cases, changes in vision may be long lasting or permanent
  • In extremely rare cases, eyelid reduction surgery can lead to blindness. Smoking, pre-existing eye disease, straining, lifting and coughing can add to this risk.

Dr Sedaghat is an Australian-trained Specialist General Surgeon with subspecialisation in Breast Surgery and Breast Surgical Oncology. She is BreastSurgANZ certified in breast surgery and awarded professional certification with distinction in oncoplastic breast surgery from the University of Sydney.

Dr. Louis Wessels

Dr. Louis Wessels is a highly qualified specialist plastic, cosmetic, and reconstructive surgeon with a particular focus on breast and body surgery, including liposuction.

 

His practice encompasses the full spectrum of cosmetic and reconstructive procedures, with special expertise in breast surgery. These include primary and revision breast augmentation, breast reduction, breast lift, and tuberous breast reconstruction, as well as body contouring procedures such as abdominoplasty (tummy tuck) and liposuction.

 

Dr. Wessels completed his medical degree (MBChB) in South Africa, followed by internship and general surgery training in one of the most demanding clinical environments. He subsequently completed both his Fellowship and Master of Medicine in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery in South Africa, gaining extensive experience across complex reconstructive and cosmetic procedures.

 

He later completed a second Fellowship in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery in Sydney, Australia, and was awarded Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (FRACS) in 2015. Dr. Wessels has published internationally recognised research on breast implant infection and outcomes following breast augmentation surgery.

 

He subsequently graduated from Macquarie University in the inaugural intake of the Master of Advanced Surgery (Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery), for which he was awarded a scholarship from Johnson & Johnson.
