Breast asymmetry occurs when one breast has a different size, volume, position, or form from the other.
Breast asymmetry is very common and affects all women to different degrees. There are a number of reasons why a woman’s breasts can change in size or volume, including trauma, puberty, and hormonal changes. Your breast tissue can change when you’re ovulating, and can often feel more full and sensitive. It’s common for the breasts to look bigger because they actually grow from water retention and blood flow. However, during your menstrual cycle, they’ll return to normal size.
Another cause for asymmetrical breasts is a condition called juvenile hypertrophy of the breast. Though rare, this can cause one breast to grow significantly larger than the other. It can be corrected with surgery, but it may lead to a number of psychological issues and insecurities.
There is a number of ways Dr Wessels can treat concerns regarding breast symmetry this may include a breast augmentation, breast reduction, breast lift, fat grafting or a combination of surgeries.
We regularly get asked about our procedures, so we have put together a couple of questions we get asked on a regular basis. If there is something else you would like to know, please get in touch!
Yes, in some cases this surgery is considered a medical procedure so your private health insurance may cover your hospital costs.
In some cases, Medicare rebates are available on this procedure.
Whether or not you should consider any changes depends on how you feel about the asymmetry and if it’s causing you physical discomfort or emotional distress.
From a medical standpoint, there’s no need to change your breasts unless the asymmetry is affecting your quality of life or causing issues like back pain, posture problems, or difficulties with clothing. If it’s purely cosmetic and you’re unhappy with the way it looks, then surgery is an option, but it’s entirely a personal decision. We always recommend consulting with your surgeon to discuss your concerns, explore your options, and determine what’s best for you.
