Gummy Smile
A gummy smile happens to certain people when their upper lip lifts above their teeth too much, exposing the upper gums and resulting in what can be perceived as an unattractive ‘gummy’ smile. Sometimes gummy smiles are genetic, and will run in a family.
The muscle responsible for this hyperactive movement is called the levator labii superioris alaeque nasi, by injecting a small dose of wrinkle relaxer product into this muscle we can stop the gums and teeth being overexposed.
Wrinkle Relaxers are made up of botulinum toxins that, when injected into the facial muscles, temporarily block local nerve impulses that trigger contractions. As it is prescription only medication, it can only be administered by a medical professional at one cosmetic.
It’s important to understand that wrinkle relaxer treatment is not a permanent solution, the result lasts for 2-3 months. If you have no further treatments the muscles will return to their normal function and lines will gradually go back to how they looked before injection.

What is involved?
The treatment involves thoroughly cleaning the area first. Your practitioner will then mark up the area and determine where the toxin should be injected. A number of small injections will be completed by a very small needle. You will then be explained the aftercare.
Your wrinkle relaxer appointment will take about 15-30 minutes from start to finish. As soon as the series of injections is completed, you can go back to your regular activities.
At One Cosmetic, we use only the most advanced range of wrinkle relaxers. Due to Australian guidelines, we cannot use brand names online, however we stock the two leading brands available.
Risks
As always, there is risk involved with every treatment. At One Cosmetic we like our patients to be aware of risks and be well educated on the treatments they are undergoing. The risks associated with lip filler treatments are:
- Headache in some patients
- Nausea
- Redness
- Temporary facial weakness or drooping
- Asymmetry
- Eyelid droop and eyebrow droop
- Infection is a very rare complication, but always a possibility when the needle goes into the skin

No, our team is selective in who they treat. Below is a guide of patients who may not be suitable for treatment
- Anyone under the age of 18
- Active skin disease, inflammation or skin related problems.
- Pregnant, breast-feeding or women trying to conceive a child
- Individuals with medical conditions that lower the body’s immune response or individuals undergoing therapy that is immunosuppressive may be more prone to infection by a skin injection procedure
- Any patients with eaton lambert syndrome
- Patients with excessive upper eyelid skin hanging down over their eyes. If the horizontal forehead lines are treated in these people, any minor droop in their lids will become more noticeable.
You should start to see a visible improvement in the treated areas within a week. The full result will be noticeable at week 2 post treatment.
After a consultation one of our practitioners will determine how many units are required to treat the area. The normal dose is anywhere from 4-6 units.
There is no right or wrong answer here. Patients may start having wrinkle relaxer treatments when lines and wrinkles on their face start to bother them, if they dont bother you, then you do not need to have them treated.
If you’re looking for a hard and fast rule about when to start treatment, we’re going to disappoint you, because there isn’t one. Although many people start getting preventive treatments in their 20s there’s no one “magic” age when you should start getting it.
Once you start noticing fine lines beginning to start, that’s when you should consider wrinkle relaxer. If you want to prevent the earliest fine lines from becoming full-blown wrinkles, preventative treatment can be the solution. Wrinkle relaxer is approved for patients who are 18 years and older and most experts agree that patients in their mid to late 20s are at a good age for preventative Botox treatment.
Most people wait until they start to see wrinkles before they seek treatment, but preventative treatment uses wrinkle relaxer to treat wrinkles before they emerge. By injecting the muscles that typically cause wrinkles around the mouth, eyes, and eyebrows with wrinkle relaxer before they start to develop wrinkles, you are essentially preventing them before they happen.
